Greenwood Cemetery is located at the corner of Auburn & Main Streets, Rockford, Illinois. It was established in 1845. Since Greenwood is still an active cemetery, it has many older monuments and newer ones interspersed. Greenwood Cemetery is the oldest and largest cemetery in Rockford.
Many of Rockford's earliest influential leaders are buried in Greenwood Cemetery. There are nearly 25,000 burials in Greenwood and room for an additional 25,000 over 65 acres of land.

Thefts at Greenwood
As you may already know, Greenwood Cemetery was burglarized in mid-January 2012, and the doors of a family mausoleum were stolen. The Cemetery is in contact with the Rockford Police Department and the Mayor's office, but as of yet we have no further information about this criminal event. We are saddened, angry and disbelieving that someone would violate a cemetery's final resting places. We want to assure you that we will prosecute the criminal if there is an arrest. Our hope, of course, is that the authorities will find the doors and we can return them to the family's mausoleum.
